Basic Cigar Construction
A cigar consists of three main components:
- FillerThe inner tobacco that makes up the core of the cigar
- BinderHolds the filler together and provides structure
- WrapperThe outer layer that gives the cigar its appearance and contributes to flavor
Cigar Types
Hand-Made
Use “long filler” tobacco running the cigar's full length. Premium quality with superior burn and draw.
Machine-Made
Use “short filler” with homogenized binders/wrappers. More affordable option for everyday smoking.
Wrapper Colors
Seven standard wrapper classifications, from lightest to darkest:
Green, rare
Light tan
Medium brown
Reddish
Darker
Dark, sweet
Black, bold flavor
Cutting & Lighting
Cutting
The guillotine cut is preferred—it removes the cap across the entire top, allowing maximum airflow.
Alternatives include punches, piercers, and V-cutters. Each creates a different draw experience.
Lighting
Use wooden matches or butane lighters. Avoid paper matches—they can impart unwanted flavors.
Apply flame below the cigar's end while rotating it to ensure complete, even lighting.
Storage & Humidors
Ideal Conditions
70°F / 70%
Temperature / Relative Humidity
This prevents cigars from drying out or developing tobacco beetles.
Humidor Selection
Spanish cedar interiors are essential—other woods can interfere with flavor. Units need tight seals and humidification devices.
Use propylene glycol solution or distilled water for humidification.
